Rep Amy Grant’s Words Matter

Rep Amy Grant’s Words Matter

Democratic Leaders in DuPage County – For Immediate Release
Monday October 5, 2020

We are disappointed to learn that the Daily Herald Editorial Board has chosen not to rescind their endorsement of Rep. Amy Grant. Following her racist and homophobic statements about her opponent Ken Mejia-Beal, “ya know, Black Caucus, that’s all we need is another person on the black caucus” and “he’s afraid of the reaction people might give him. Not because he’s Black, but because of the way he talks. He’s all LGBTQ. He wants to work for the chronically ill. He just gives us like crazy…”

Words matter. Words reflect how we think and feel. There is absolutely no context where these words are acceptable. This is not about politics or partisanship, but whether someone who feels free enough to make these statements to a complete stranger on the phone is fit to serve in public office. Representative Grant did make these statements and is not fit to serve. Racism and homophobia have no place in our community, and the residents of the 42nd Illinois House District deserve better.
