Paula Deacon Garcia in her own words.

I attend as many committee meetings as possible (even the ones I am not on). I have gone on tours of most departments to learn what the process is and if there are any needs. I have toured stormwater facilities and attended meetings to promote best management practices. I drive to look at properties being voted on by the Development Committee to see exactly what the petitioner’s are requesting.

I asked for a proclamation for Mental Health Awareness in May and I have had meetings with Behavioral Health services as well as NAMI to find ways to end the stigma and get help to those in need. I took a course on Mental Health First Aid Training also. I have attended via zoom a MICAP Court graduation. I have facilitated meetings with proponents of 708 Mental Health Boards and those that have questions regarding these boards.

I have had meetings with many people doing good work in DuPage County – like Mike Beary of JUST DuPage (who facilitates better ways to help incarcerated people-training, gardening and support groups), and Steve Stefani of Hope for Healing (a not-for-profit organization providing support for individuals and families affected by drug addiction). I am now working with Deborah Venezia (Arts DuPage) in bringing artist’s new work encouraging people to get vaccinated to the Health Department. I have also kept in close contact with other elected officials (State Representatives, State Senators and Forest Preserve Commissioners, along with my fellow board members) to find solutions that work for everyone in the County. I believe that the more connections we make with people doing great work – the better we can serve DuPage residents.

The work now is making the best decisions for spending the ARPA funds and I have had phone conversations and meetings with local agencies hit hard by Covid-19, as well as listened to presentations by County staff, the Health Department, Choose DuPage and DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau. Decisions by the whole board will be coming soon on the distribution of funds.

Along with my elected duties I continue to Chair the Lisle Township Vegetable Garden – 5th year of working with a great team of volunteers to donate over 1600 pounds of fresh produce to the food insecure.
