Merry Christmas, Professor Hawkins; No Joshin’ by Joshua Boyce, DPDC Intern

Merry Christmas, Professor Hawkins; No Joshin’ by Joshua Boyce, DPDC Intern

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it and especially to Larycia Hawkins.

If you keep up with local news, you’ve probably heard something about the situation of Wheaton College professor Dr. Larycia Hawkins, who has boldly chosen to wear the hijab to counteract the anti-Muslim rhetoric that has recently been so prominent in our national discourse.

Recently, Dr. Hawkins was placed on administrative leave by the administration of Wheaton College due to a Facebook post positing that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. She wrote, “I love my Muslim neighbor because s/he deserves love by virtue of her/his human dignity. I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book. And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God.”

Dr. Hawkins’ proclamation has ruffled some feathers at Wheaton College. Click here for a summary of these events, published by the Daily Herald: Wheaton College professor put on leave for saying Muslims, Christians have same God. Since being placed on leave, Dr. Hawkins has sought reconciliation with Wheaton College administration, but the college is playing hardball and has offered Dr. Hawkins two bad options: teach without tenure for two years or resign.

We at the Democratic Party of DuPage County support Dr. Hawkins and believe that her bold stance is admirable and necessary in this time of division and disunity. We want to see Dr. Hawkins re-instated immediately, and we need your help to make this happen.

To that end, we would like to encourage you to attend a Unity and Solidarity rally, hosted by the Islamic Foundation in Villa Park, on January 1, 2016. For more details on this event, contact me atintern@dupagedemocrats.com.

We need your help in the fight against division and disunity. As true believers in freedom and liberty, we progressives must stand against the demonization of Muslim individuals. We must also oppose the silencing of individuals like Dr. Hawkins who boldly act to counter unhelpful narratives. We are all part of one human family, and it’s time that we act like it. To quote the IWW, “an injury to one is an injury to all.” If we stand by and allow our Muslim brothers and sisters to be demonized, we are inviting the same upon ourselves.

In solidarity with all of humanity,

Joshua Boyce
