DuPage Democrats Statement on Insurrection in DC

DuPage Democrats Statement on the Events in DC on January 6, 2021 – For Immediate Release

The events of today will truly be marked as one of the most shameful attacks against American democracy. On a day where both Republicans and Democrats met in Washington to fulfill their constitutional duties of certifying the votes of the Electoral College, the President decided to once again lie to his supporters saying the election was rigged and that he was the winner.

He then told his supporters to march to the Capitol, which soon after turned into an insurrection against a legitimate transfer of power. As a mob breached the Capitol building, breaking windows, entering both chambers of Congress, occupying offices and endangering lives, the President told the mob “we love you”.

Every single American should be deeply disturbed by this attack on our democracy and our constitution, and we hope they will join us in condemning this mob and those who incited and enabled them, including the Republican Party members who went along with seditious lies about the election for personal, political gain.

America is so much better than what we witnessed today, and we look forward to President-Elect Biden’s inauguration and the return of stable and honorable leadership that respects democracy.
