Congratulations Dawn DeSart DuPage County Board Legislative Chair!
The DuPage Democrats would like to formally congratulate County Board Member Dawn DeSart on her committee election as Legislative Chair of the DuPage County Board.
Dawn is also the Vice-Chair of the DuPage County Board Animal Services Committee.
Dawn DeSart was elected to the DuPage County Board in November 2018.
DeSart serves as Chairwoman of the Legislative & Governmental Affairs Committee and as Vice Chair of the Animal Services Committee. She also serves on the Health & Human Services Committee, the Justice & Public Safety Committee, the Public Works Committee, the Stormwater Committee, the Transportation Committee, and the County Board Rules & Procedures Committee.
After the Covid-19 pandemic hit the United States, the federal government approved a CARES Act stimulus package, of which DuPage County received just over $161M. With so many small businesses negatively impacted by the Spring shut-down, it was DeSart’s idea to create the county’s Small Business Relief Fund. That fund of $20M helped hundreds of small businesses – including restaurants and bars – receive a maximum of $15,000 each to help offset rent, utility bills, and employee expenses.
In late 2019 and early 2020, DeSart worked tirelessly with the U.S. Humane Society, a bipartisan group of members on the DuPage County Board, and constituents to ban the sale of commercially bred dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores in Naperville. In February of 2020, that work paid off, when the Naperville City Council voted in favor of the ban.
As Vice Chair of the Ad Hoc Adult Business Committee, Dawn participated in hearings on sexually oriented businesses which were operating in DuPage County, and helped pass bipartisan legislation to mitigate health and safety impacts, including not exposing students at a nearby high school to a locally operated adult business.
DeSart has hosted two panel discussions for constituents called “Community Conversations.” The first, in May 2019 centered on affordable housing, while the second in January 2020 focused on suicide awareness and the path toward Hope. Both panel discussions were well received and well attended.
DeSart serves on the Board of Directors of Naper Pride, a 501(3)(c) organization which is a family-centered, Naperville-focused, celebration of LGBTQ+ members of our city and community. Through Naper Pride, DeSart was a leader at their 2019 Health & Wellness Fair, and is currently on the leadership team planning for the 2021 Health & Wellness Fair, scheduled for November.
